The Fire Marshal is responsible for ensuring fire safety compliance within the City of Dickson.  Typical responsibilities include plan reviews of new site developments; new and modified commercial structures and multi-family dwellings; and fire protection systems.  Additional duties include inspections of new construction for compliance with the applicable building and fire codes, as well as inspections of existing structures (except one and two-family dwellings) to ensure compliance with the fire prevention code adopted in an effort to reduce the risk of death and injury due to fire.   

The Fire Marshal typically conducts fire scene investigations to determine origin and cause and works closely with the local police department, district attorney's office, and other state/ federal agencies as needed in cases that involve suspected arson activity. 

The Fire Marshal is also responsible for issuing burn permits within the city limits, and, with the chief and mayors office, evaluating weather conditions for issuance of a burn ban as needed.

Dickson Fire Department and the City of Dickson follow the 2018 International Fire Code and the 2006 Fire and Life Safety Code. These codes ensure the safety of buildings and dwellings inside the city, providing requirements for building construction and required safety features. These codes are readily available in print and online. The Fire Marshal is responsible for overseeing the adoption of these codes as well as enforcement of the requirements listed within them.

The Fire Marshal works closely with the City of Dickson to ensure proper review of all submitted plans. All plans must be submitted to the City of Dickson Planning and Zoning Department at City Hall (600 E. Walnut St.). If available, please submit both paper and electronic copies of all plans.

Any monitored dwelling is now required to have a security box placed on the building, which must contain keys and access cards needed to make entry in to the building and access all areas within the building.

Dickson Fire Department perform routine and annual commercial inspections for all businesses in the City of Dickson. We will perform inspections upon request. We utilize a third-party vendor to process all of our inspections. Please see the provided document below.

Dickson Fire Department perform inspections of mobile food vendor vehicles upon request. To set up an appointment for an inspection please call 615-446-6331. Please set up vehicles in the parking lot behind the fire station, closest to the railroad tracks, and be in "operational mode", not "tow mode". All equipment must be present and operational. Please provide a copy of your menu. Allow 20-30 minutes for each inspection, which will include fire extinguisher training.

Dickson Fire Department issues burn permits for burning within the City of Dickson. Permits are issued daily, given that there is no current burn ban. The initial application can be made in person or online. Please submit a request below or call 615-446-6331 for your initial permit. Once the initial application is on file with the fire department, you may call to obtain a burn permit for the day. Burning is limited to natural vegetation grown on your property. Burning of material from another site or burning construction material is strictly prohibited. You are responsible for smoke produced while burning. Please keep fire small enough that ash and debris stay on your property. Permit will be revoked if it becomes a nuisance.
